Tax on ₹30 lakh salary: the short answer
In the new regime, a salary of ₹30,00,000 pays ₹4,75,800 in income tax for Tax Year 2026-27 (FY 2026-27), including 4% cess. That is ₹39,650 a month.
| Situation | New regime | Old regime |
|---|---|---|
| No deductions besides standard deduction | ₹4,75,800 | ₹7,25,400 |
| 80C ₹1.5L + 80D ₹25K + NPS ₹50K | ₹4,75,800 | ₹6,55,200 |
| Same, plus ₹2L home loan interest | ₹4,75,800 | ₹5,92,800 |
The old regime is cheaper only if your deductions and exemptions add up to more than about ₹8 lakh (besides the standard deduction). HRA counts toward that total, so renters in big cities should run their own numbers above.
How the new regime tax is worked out
Taxable income = ₹30,00,000 − ₹75,000 standard deduction = ₹29,25,000. Slabs: nil up to ₹4 lakh, 5% to ₹8 lakh, 10% to ₹12 lakh, 15% to ₹16 lakh, 20% to ₹20 lakh, 25% to ₹24 lakh and 30% above. Add 4% health and education cess on the tax.
