When you need rent receipts
Employers ask for rent receipts before they reduce TDS for your HRA exemption, usually by January for the year ending in March. Without them, extra tax is deducted from your last few salaries, and you can only claim the exemption later in your return.
HRA exemption is only allowed in the old tax regime. Use the HRA calculator to see how much of your HRA is tax-free.
What a valid rent receipt includes
- Tenant’s and landlord’s names, and the address of the rented home.
- Rent amount, the month it covers, and how it was paid.
- The landlord’s signature. For cash payments above ₹5,000, a revenue stamp is commonly expected.
- The landlord’s PAN, if the rent is over ₹1 lakh for the year.
Good to know
- Paying rent by bank or UPI gives you proof beyond the receipts, which helps if the tax department asks.
- Rent paid to parents can be claimed if you really pay it and they show it as income. Rent paid to your spouse is usually not accepted.
- If your monthly rent is above ₹50,000, you have to deduct TDS on it yourself and deposit it with the government.
