Tax on ₹6 lakh salary: the short answer
In the new regime, a salary of ₹6,00,000 pays ₹0 in income tax for Tax Year 2026-27 (FY 2026-27), including 4% cess. That is ₹0 a month. The ₹60,000 rebate wipes out the tax entirely, because taxable income after the ₹75,000 standard deduction is ₹12 lakh or less.
| Situation | New regime | Old regime |
|---|---|---|
| No deductions besides standard deduction | ₹0 | ₹23,400 |
| 80C ₹1.5L + 80D ₹25K + NPS ₹50K | ₹0 | ₹0 |
| Same, plus ₹2L home loan interest | ₹0 | ₹0 |
The new regime already brings your tax to nil, so the old regime can at best match it. Stick with the new regime unless you also have other income.
How the new regime tax is worked out
Taxable income = ₹6,00,000 − ₹75,000 standard deduction = ₹5,25,000. Slabs: nil up to ₹4 lakh, 5% to ₹8 lakh, 10% to ₹12 lakh, 15% to ₹16 lakh, 20% to ₹20 lakh, 25% to ₹24 lakh and 30% above. Add 4% health and education cess on the tax.
